The figure of Lucifer is a convergence of a myriad of archetypal facets. It's a mix that includes, among other original substances, rebellion, and transgression, the profaning of the divine, the abyss, damnation, the origin of light and the beauty of mystery. As a character, he is, in essence, "dazzling.". His name means the bearer of light.

The painting of Lucifer was classically rendered, depicting the fallen angel as a man of seemingly perfect symmetry and muscular proportion. Interestingly, "The Fallen Angel" painting was also one of the first paintings to depict the Devil or Satan as the subject matter, and sources report that the jurists were "shocked" when they saw it.

Why? It was too sophisticated, too sublime, too bold to remain in situ at a sacred place such as Liège's St. Paul's Cathedral. The sculpture was too angelic to give a sense it's depicting the fallen angel, the one that Dante confidently placed in the ninth and the deepest circle of Hell, frosted in ice to his waist.
